Christmas in Japan: How Our Kids Pretend Not to Know Who Santa Really Is

Japanese Culture Explained

In our family, the kids have completely figured out the truth about Santa Claus.
And yet… every year, they insist that Santa is real and look up at the sky on Christmas Eve, whispering their wishes for presents.

After they fall asleep, we quietly place the gifts under the tree,
along with a handwritten note in elegant, Santa-style cursive.

On Christmas morning—miraculously the only day they wake up early—
their eyes sparkle as they find the presents.

“Santa came!!”
They shout with pure joy.

Moments like these remind me just how blessed we are as parents.

Even though they know who “Santa” really is,
they continue pretending not to notice.
Is it because they still want the presents?
Or because they want to let us experience that magical moment year after year?

Either way, we love seeing their smiles.
So of course—we’ll gladly play Santa again next year. (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)

The Christmas I’ll Never Forget: My Husband’s Surprising Gift

On our very first Christmas together as a married couple,
my husband told me to wait outside the living room so he could “set up” my present.

A bouquet of roses?
Jewelry?
Something sparkly and romantic?

My heart was pounding with anticipation.

When I finally stepped into the room…

I mean… I was happy. Truly.
But also—why corn soup?!

The shock was so strong that I don’t remember what happened afterward.
Maybe we had a dramatic argument?
All I know is that Santa never visited me again.

Seventeen years of marriage later…
honestly, even corn soup would make me happy now. (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵)
